A POLITICAL LINE artist's book

 

A POLITICAL LINE explores the relationship between walked, drawn and written lines.
In 2015 I embarked on a journey from London towards Baghdad, on foot. The inspiration behind the walk was a journey made sixty four years prior by my Iraqi Grandfather and English Grandmother at the start of their married life. This concertina book is itself a long line which uses our walked line to narrate the line made by my Grandparents. The details of their story are told 'in lines', pictorially and textually, from the lines of bombs which fell around them to the lines of their ever blossoming family tree. With its simple pencil line drawings and minimal explanatory text, A POLITICAL LINE is essentially a love story. As the path of my walk and the path of my Grandparents' journey intermingle, we read of a love story drawn the length of a line which, in a contemporary sense, we largely understand as a narrative of war.

A POLITICAL LINE has been exhibited at PHOENIX GALLERY in Athens, CITY ARTS GALLERY in Nottingham and at FALMOUTH UNIVERSITY.
